Analysis: average theatrical movie ticket prices in 2020, 2021 and 2022

In 1989, the National Association of Theater Owners (NATO) began providing an annual and quarterly report on the average ticket price in North America. This widely used statistic enabled a precise tracking of any inflation in movie ticket prices. However, NATO discontinued the report in 2020 when theaters were forced to close due to the Covid-19 pandemic and has not yet resumed the service. In a bid to bridge the resulting data gap, an analysis of pre-pandemic, pandemic and post-pandemic ticket prices was conducted ultimately producing new estimates for ticket prices for the quarters of 2020 to 2022. The results of the analysis suggested an inflation of ticket prices, with the estimates showing that prices in 2020 have recovered from an expected squeeze during the pandemic to a level slightly above pre-pandemic prices. The estimates for 2021 predicted a gradual growth in ticket prices, with 2022 projected to exceed the 2019 pre-pandemic values. From this analysis, it is expected that movie ticket prices will continue to increase in the coming years as the industry continues to recover from the pandemic. Although NATO is yet to resume its service, new estimates of movie ticket prices can be calculated based on the analysis conducted and allow theater owners to accurately track future inflation in the industry.

In 1989, the National Association of Theater Owners (NATO) began to report the average price of a movie ticket in North America annually and quarterly. This widely utilized statistic allowed for the inflation of movie ticket prices to be monitored accurately. However, NATO ceased to provide this benchmark in 2020 when theaters closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and has not resumed this task yet. In order to fill the gap in data, an analysis of ticket prices from before, during and after the pandemic has been conducted, resulting in new estimates for the quarterly ticket prices for 2020 to 2022. The outcome of this analysis reveals that ticket price inflation is real.
