Ghostbusters:Afterlife

After quite a number of underwhelming sequels and reboots, it was always going to be a tall order to follow on from one of the greatest comedies of the eighties. Ghostbusters (1984) was lighting a bottle perhaps?. And so how to tackle a follow-up decades later?. Seemingly a direct follow-on from Ghostbusters II (1989). Picking up years later, as an estranged daughter and granddaughter, find themselves, inheritors to Egon Spengler’s old farmhouse. As they settle into the old farmstead, they discover the local town is home to mysterious Earthquakes. And increasingly spooky going ons. Luckily Grandaughter Callie (a great leading performance from a young Carrie Coon) has inherited her grandfather’s Scientific genius, and soon discovers the going ons, along with her brother Trevor ( 'Stranger Things' Finn Wolfhard) unravel the mystery of her grandfather's demise and his hasty departure from his fellow legendary Ex- Ghostbusters team-mates. Certainly, Ghostbusters Afterlife is geared toward a much younger audience than the edgier original. More a Scooby–Doo light mystery, than anything truly new or even scary on display here for a ghost story, which is a shame. And a story that is almost a remake of the original with a plot that is feels more like gentle cover version of the original rather than something new that at times. Certainly on display here is some genuine love for the original here , not suprising as son of 1984 original director Jason Reitman directs here. Some great side character support from Paul Rudd,as school teacher to the kid's school and some neat nods to the original line up will please fans of the original.Perhaps the shadow of the original is too long for any follow up to truly escape from,but as a conclusion to the Ghostbusters legacy it serves it well enough, if not bringing anything really new to call its own.But its heart is in the right place.
