When Rocket(voiced by Bradley Cooper was just a youth, his fate led him to be taken under the control of the High Evolutionary, (Chukwudi, Iwuji) an unstable scientist who has delusions of grandeur and believed that the ultimate utopian society stemmed from an eerie laboratory where he experimented on animals.
Despite escaping, Rocket was forced to leave behind the love of his life, Lylla - a compassionate otter with mechanical arms. However the High Evolutionary has set his sights on retrieving his prized experiment and orders Adam Warlock (played by Will Poulter) to retrieve the raccoon..
In doing so Rocket is wounded, and without a fail safe key held by the High Evolutionary, Rocket can’t be saved. So it’s up to his teammates the Guardians to find said key, and uncover the orgins of Rockets Past.
The film serves a conclusion to the trilogy of Marvel’s favourite misfit family. Who have played a part in introducing us to Marvel’s key events over the last decade or so.
So Writer /Director James Gunn returns to tie up loose strands of the members of the crew. It’s really Rocket’s story in that this film frames itself around. And delivers the most emotional beats to his story and arc.
Main villain. Chukwudi gives a delightful performance as mad tyrannical Scientist in the film.
However ,some character feel a bit short changed as a result. Adam Warlock fans, may feel this character is more comic relief than serious threat.
Also it is a chance for StarLord’s (Chris Pratt) and Zoe Saldaña’s Gamora (an alternate-universe version with no experience of their relationship) to see if they have a possible future. But this really goes nowhere , and maybe is a big piece of the chemistry that is a miss here, that served the comedy so well in previous instalments.
The film is really more a heist movie, but not as fresh as when the original first hit the screens in 2014, and is a little too indulgent in places, with the soundtrack.
It does feel a bit tired and over familiar in places, and a bit long, but gives his cast their moment to shine when he can .It certainly is one of the better efforts than alot of the Marvel Phase 4 offerings. However it does demonstrate , it is time to bid farewell to our heroes. And leaves our Guardians in a good place ,to say goodbye to.
However it does leave you feeling a certain excitement as to what James Gunn will bring to pastures new, and with a whole new set of DC characters , when he gets to play with them as he swaps studios with future movies.
