REVIEW
The recent comic adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s Invincible has hit Amazon Prime. You may be familiar with Kirkman’s work on The Walking Dead, here Kirkman tackles his take on the superhero genre with Invincible.
Season 1 of Invincible introduces us to the world of Teenager Mark Grayson, who is currently having all the everyday issues and experiences someone his age has, plus the added fact his dad is Oni Man the worlds greatest Superhero.
The first episode seems like a regular Superhero themed animation, right up until the end scene where the viewer realises this won’t be a cartoon and is in fact going to be very adult in nature due to an attack on the heroes.
Mark Grayson himself develops superpowers, and we learn that he is part human part Viltrumite, the Alien race his father Oni-Man is from. A theme of the series is the nature and intentions of Oni-Man perhaps not being as heroic as first thought.
Invincible works well at making the grounded and everyday events as interesting as the Superhero battles.
Mark’s on-off relationship with Amber, his mother Debbies connection to Oni Man as the Earth Woman who influenced his first experiences on earth are to name but two.
The series gets better as it progresses, from Mark/Invincible interacting with street-level villains to space-bound threats.
What’s also good regarding the show is that events have been moved around here and there compared to the comics, and the show really benefits from this cherry-picking.
The shock ending of episode 1 for example happens towards the end of the first arc of comics.
The last two episodes really show where the story is going to go, and it’s good news to know that a season 2 and 3 is coming.
As someone who has read the comics, the best is most definitely yet to come, building upon a great start to the animated show.
