REVIEW
Loki, on Disney + , is a six-part TV series created by Michael Waldron. The first episode just aired on June 9th 2021.
The first thing to say is that Disney/Marvel noticed that Loki has become, since his first introduction in Thor, in 2011, a very popular MCU character (thanks to Tom Hiddleston great performance). This might be the main reason why Loki seems to keep coming back in the MCU (he seemed to die in Thor, he seemed to die in Thor: the Dark World, and he really died in Avengers Endgame)
Loki is set straight after Endgame. So, how does he come back this time, in this first episode? Well, the episode starts with a scene taken from Endgame: Loki steals the Tesseract from the Avengers (who travelled back in time, in 2012), and uses it to escape. By doing this, the timeline is broken. And for that reason, Loki is being taken prisoner by the Time Variance Authority (TVA), who is in charge of monitoring the Sacred Timeline of events in the MCU.
One of the TVA's mission, is to remove (reset?) variants from the Timeline. A variant is someone who is messing up with the Timeline (like Loki stealing the Tesseract from the Avengers and escaping; he was supposed to go to jail in Asgard)
In the Time Variance Authority headquarters, Loki will learn about a lot about himself, thanks to his personal jail officer, a TVA agent called Mobius (played by Owen Wilson)
Mobius goes against his own superiors, convincing them that Loki can be used by the TVA against another variant who previously escaped, and has killed a lot of TVA agents.
There is a lot of exposition in this episode. But since we're dealing with strange concepts like time-travel, or multiverse, it was needed. And the exposition is really well done because the episode still has a good pacing. The humour helps a lot with great dialogues and great writing.
Tom Hiddleston, once more, gives an amazing performance as Loki (especially the scenes where he finds out about his mother's death, his father's death, and his own death) .
The production design is also very interesting: the TVA looks like a boring office from the 70's/80's (kind of like the Umbrella Academy, or the movie Zodiac).
A first episode of a TV show is supposed to set the rules: this is done thanks to exposition. And it is supposed to keep you interested. You are definitely going to be interested after watching the first episode.
There are enough mysteries in this first episode to make you want to watch the next episodes: who really is this killer variant? What are the true intentions of the TVA ? Who is behind the TVA ? And how will the Loki TV series, another MCU phase 4 instalment with the multiverse concept at his core, connect Wandavision (January 2021), Spiderman No way Home (December 2021) and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (March 2022) ?
This is overall is very strong first episode
