REVIEW
A serial killer terrorizes London while disgraced detective John Luther (Idis Elba) sits behind bars. Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath (Andy Serkis)who now taunts him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job at any cost. Luther: The Fallen Sun evokes an immense sensation – it can be likened to Idris Elba's interpretation of James Bond, but with an irritable, bulky DCI John Luther, rather than the sleek Agent 007. Luther introduces some unique and exciting elements in its latest instalment , but quite a shift from the more subtle and down to earth tone in the BBC TV show's earlier seasons. From a villain with a grander motive, (with a plot involving internet blackmailing key members of power) to worldwide jaunts to a villain underground lairs in Norway. It all becomes very James Bond indeed. Serkis's performance initially exudes a chilling theatrical aura; from his rendition of Diana Ross to kissing his victims on the forehead and celebrating their demise with a startling 'woohoo'. However, his over-the-top and unnerving delivery loses its luster when the scale of his performance is expanded. Although he would have been an excellent choice as the show's villain over a slow burn over a series, here in this Luther/Bond multiverse movie, and the impact of his acting feels out of place. It's unfortunate that this latest Luther's jaunt doesn't quite our expectations of yesteryear. However, there are plenty of traditional Luther elements in this film that make up for it and makes for an entertaining watch, just don't engage the grey cell too much, just sit back and enjoy.
