REVIEW
Following a family tragedy in 8 year old's Cady life (Violet McGraw) it falls to her aunt, Gemma (Allison Williams) notably seen in Blumhouse's previous thriller ("Get Out"), a talented robotics engineer, to take charge of her niece. However, she struggles to balance her work life and new home responsibilities. She finds the perfect solution by combining her new project for a toy robotic company; "M3GAN," with her new home life circumanstances with Cady. Problems arise, though, when Cady's reliance on her new robotic friend proves increasingly unhealthy, and the "M3GAN" AI starts interpreting her programming beyond her initial perceived parameters, turning from babysitting best friend to obsessive psycho as their "relationship" deepens. While the pacing is lean and coupled with some great production values, the film never quite pushes the button on going into full horror mode, like famous predecessors such as the "Child's Play" franchise. This is likely due to editing choices to get a more audience-friendly rating, but it doesn't matter. What really works here are the undercurrent fears of AI, what are real and perceived relationships, and reliance, as well as the practical and psychological territories to be navigated. A great performance by McGraw as the girl who seems to have found a respite in her grief in the arms of M3GAN, but is it really for the best? It does eventually sink underneath into the bog standard horror slasher, but as a modern social thriller-tech comedy, this works just fine. And M3GaN itself risks becoming the new modern day screen villain of the year taking the villain crown from 'Annabel' or even Child's Play 'Chucky!s. It will remind sci-fi cinephiles of Paul Verhoeven's 1987 "Robocop" with its toy advert nods or James Cameron's "Battle Angel Alita." Roll on "M3GAN 2.0" The uncut version, please?
