SEX EDUCATION

Sex Education-The best teen drama Ever?

Richard Fontana

It's back to school with the latest season of Sex education on Netflix. Reviewer Richard Fontana tells us why he couldn't wait...

Why Sex Education is the best teen drama ever created? This is only my opinion, obviously. This article probably won’t convince you that Sex Education is the best-teen drama ever created. This article only exists for three reasons :

Writing about it will help me understand why this show is so successful.

Writing about it will help me understand why (binge) watching Sex Education is such an emotional journey.

Lastly, convincing you, you, who’s reading this article, that you should give this show a chance

Moordale. This is where it happens. An American-style British High School. Because, yes, Sex Education is a British TV Show set in the United Kingdom (it is shot in Wales by the way)

The creator of the show wanted to pay homage to the teen movies of the 80’s / 90’s (ala John Hughes). You can see that on how the high school looks like, by what the students are wearing, and on how they are introduced to us at first.

At first glance, the characters could remind you of characters from the Breakfast Club :

The good looking, popular head-boy and successful competitive swimmer. The bad boy/bully. The rich and popular girl, and her crew (think of the Plastics in Mean Girls).

The introvert/nerd and not-so-popular student. The smart and pretty outcast who doesn’t (want to ?) fit in ( a bit like a female version of Josh Hartnett’s character in The Faculty)

One of the many good things about Sex Education is that the show’s writers will enjoy breaking the stereotypes…

At the beginning of the show, we are introduced to the two main characters.

Firstly, there is Otis Millburn (played by Asa Butterfield), a 16/17 years old student who is a bit of an introvert/nerd. He’s been raised by his mother (since his parents are divorced, and his father left to the USA). His mother works from home as a sex therapist. Otis has grown up surrounded by books about sex, and with a mother who is very ”open-minded” (she loves to talk about anything with her son, even the things that make him uncomfortable).

And then, there is Maeve Whiley (played by Emma Mackey), one of Otis classmates. At first, you’d think she’s got everything going for her: she’s smart, she’s attractive, she exudes confidence. But like all characters in Sex Education, there is more than meets the eye: she doesn’t have many friends. She’s a bit of a nihilist. She usually pushes people away. We quickly learn that she lives by herself in a trailer park. Her mother, a drug addict, is in prison.

She has an older brother, but she doesn’t even know where he is.
A lot of people have let her down, and that’s why she finds it hard to get close to anyone.

‘Characters’

Otis and Maeve haven’t much in common. They don’t hang out together at school. Until one day: Maeve sees Otis giving sex advice to another student. And she also sees something else : a business opportunity. She convinces him that he has a gift. He knows how to listen to people, and to help them, especially when it’s about sexuality. And teenagers do have a lot of questions/issues related to sexuality. Maeve and Otis decide to create some kind of underground ”sex clinic” in the school: Maeve will find people (clients) who have ”sex issues”, and Otis will help them.

This storyline will help the audience get to know the other characters connected to Otis and Maeve (their classmates, their families, their friends…)

Maeve needs the money. Otis likes to help people. What started as a business relationship quickly becomes a great friendship. They then start to develop feelings for each other.

Because we are not in a typical rom-com, but in a very realistic portrayal of teenage years, they will both make mistake after mistake, and don’t know what to do about what they are feeling. During the whole show, you might think their relationship is the classic will they/won’t they we’ve seen in many TV Show. Like Ross and Rachel in Friends.

But because we are not in a typical rom-com (and we’re in a smarter TV show than Friends), and because Sex Education knows how to handle emotions, feelings and romance better than any other TV show, this TV show is always trying to be as complicated as we all are. So, in the case of Otis and Maeve, instead of being only defined by their romance, we will follow them sorting out their own problems, sorting their lives out, in order to become the best version of themselves: Otis has things to fix with his parents (so does Maeve), and has to understand his own sexual awakening. Maeve has to start trusting other people, believing that she won’t end up alone and that she has the potential of doing amazing things in life.

This ”couple” is the perfect example of what the show is about :

All characters face real and tough challenges. And most of them, because they are teenagers, don’t know how to handle their problems.

They all have to learn how to love themselves before being able to love others

Two examples: the popular head boy is always under pressure from his mothers (they want him to succeed in literally everything); he suffers from anxiety, and it gets worse and worse in the first two seasons (he even goes as far as to self-mutilation).
The high school bully, Adam (played by Connor Swindells), comes from a dysfunctional family. He hates everyone because he thinks everyone else hates him and think he’s stupid. Adam seems, in the first season, to particularly enjoy bullying Otis’s best friend, Eric, because Eric is gay. Ironically, Adam will eventually find out that’s he’s gay himself. This will make him, at first, even more, lost in life than he was before. Only because he finds it hard to accept himself for who he really is
(N.B : Adam is maybe my favourite character overall surprisingly, because of his character development and the amazing performance by Connor Swindells)

‘Sex Issues’

The seriousness of Sex Education might surprise a lot of people. By focusing at first on sexual awakenings, Sex Education is able to talk about what it really feels like to be a teenager :
not knowing who you are, and not knowing who you want to become: fitting in a society that doesn’t understand them, and that they don’t understand. Handling difficult things, like abortion, divorce, drug addiction, anxiety, sexual identity crisis…

All the topics, starting with sexuality, are addressed in a mature and professional way

A show about sex (with a lot of graphic scenes, by the way) must have been difficult to sell to any streaming services / studios. Netflix took a chance with Sex Education. And it paid off (over 40 million people have streamed the first series after its debut !)
All teenagers from any country around the world are able to identify themselves to one (or more) characters of the show. And all human beings will understand what the characters are going through.

And why? Because Sex Education writers never try to create storylines only to please their audiences. By working with sex therapists and psychologists, Sex Education is the perfect portrayal of maybe the most important years of human lives.
Characters you like might do bad things in Sex Education :
Otis, the main character, by always trying to be the good guy, but hurts a lot of people
Eric, Otis’ best friend, has to suffer from homophobia (he’s even violently attacked by two jerks at one point); but he’s always smiling; he’s always there for Otis. But in Sex Education, nobody is perfect. Because in real life, nobody is perfect. And Eric as well, will make mistakes and hurt people.

We are all defined by a tonne of different adjectives. Not one. We all faced in our past (or present) personal struggles. And we find it hard to talk about those problems to anyone. We all have had (or still having) an identity crisis.
Sex Education understands that. Sex Education shows inclusion like no other TV show (it never feels ”forced”)
You have heterosexual characters, homosexual characters, non-binary characters. And none of them are only characterized by their sexual orientation.
This is so important. For example, Eric is not defined by being ”the gay friend”. There is much more to him than this.
Hopefully, people watching this show will realize that we are all more complicated than we might think (and it’s a good thing)

This TV show provides answers to any embarrassing questions you ever had. And at the same time, it gives hope and inspiration by showing characters that keep changing throughout the seasons. The evolution of all the characters mirrors the evolutions of many of us.

Sex Education has such a positive impact on millions of people (and on me; I wish I had a TV show like that while I was growing up).

Remember: If something doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.

Sex Education seasons are now available on Netflix.
