REVIEW
Supercrooks on Netflix is an anime series based on the comics by Mark Millar and artist Leinil Francis Yu.
The story of Supercrooks is set in the same universe as Jupiter’s Legacy, also a comic by Mark Millar and a Netflix series, and characters from Jupiter’s Legacy make some brief cameos in Supercrooks. The series follows his escapades as a man who recruits fellow supervillains for jobs. It’s a really fun series and Mark Millar plays with the Superhero genre in the same way he does with Kick-Ass. In essence, Supercrooks is the story of Johnny Bolt, a young kid who develops electrical powers and wants to be a hero, however, when a serious accident occurs as a result of him testing his powers, he decides to pursue a career as a crook.
Highlight episodes in this series are:
Episode 2 - Kasey - here we meet Johnny Bolt's love interest who waits for his release from prison. At the same time, his old crew propose a heist. The series seems to be setting up a sort of Super-powered Oceans Eleven vibe. Another Great episode simply to see the creative use of superpowers on display and how our groups of villains face a powerful opponent is in Episode 4 - The Praetorian - where the Praetorian fights our main characters and beats them badly.
Another highlight is Episode 11 - Casino Grand Granite - To save The Heat/Carmine, Johnny plans a heist against major villain The Bastard, with a little reluctant help from hero The Gladiator. This is a good episode to see the grey areas between heroes and Villains. The characters of Supercrooks are really well thought out, and the angle focuses on the villains, whilst the heroes serve as vehicles to drive the villain's stories in a novel way, overall not a bad series.
