Weekend predictions: Mario unthreatened by six new wide releases

No less that six new wide releases arrive in theaters this weekend, the most of the post-pandemic era, beating the five wide releases that arrived the weekend of September 16 last year. None of them will come close to beating The Super Mario Bros. Movie in its second weekend. The battle for second place looks interesting though…

Theater counts: Super Mario fends off six newcomers to remain widest release

Sporting an eight-day domestic total of $250 million, The Super Mario Bros. Movie once again finds itself as the widest release as it heads into its second weekend, adding 28 locations for a total of 4,371 cinemas. The animated adventure opened last Wednesday and took in an impressive $204.6 million in its first five days. Mario and friends shouldn’t have any trouble staying on top at the box office despite the arrival of six wide releases making their theatrical debuts.

Weekend projections: Mario storms past $200 million in monster 5-day opening

Universal upped their projection for The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s Friday-to-Sunday earnings to $146.36 million on Sunday morning, which will be enough to take it well past $200 million over its five-day opening weekend. Needless to say, it’s breaking a lot of records this weekend, but its most remarkable feat is probably that it’s already the all-time top-grossing movie based on a game in North America.

Weekend predictions: Mario set to cart off $200 million on opening weekend

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is headed for the biggest weekend of 2023, and stands a very good chance to topping $200 million by the end of it. Universal is predicting a whopping $59 million today and $137 million over the weekend to go with the $58 million it has already earned on Wednesday and Thursday. That would add up to $195 million over its first five days in release, and the studio is probably being a little conservative in their projection. The film is so far outside the norm so far that our model has a hard time pinning

Review-Weekend predictions: Mario set to cart off $200 million on opening weekend

Theater counts: Super Mario levels up to become this week’s widest release

Wednesday saw the release of the latest film based on a classic video game when The Super Mario Bros. Movie hit theaters. The movie opened in 4,025 locations and bumps up to a solid 4,343 cinemas starting Friday. The adventure film starring Chris Pratt as the beloved Italian plumber-turned-hero nabbed an impressive $31.7 million on its opening day in North America, while taking in $34.7 million overseas. Joining Pratt in the Universal Pictures feature is Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, and Jack Black voicing the role of Bowser.

Weekend predictions: Dungeons & Dragons poised for surprise weekend win

It’s too early to crown a winner at the box office this weekend, but Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is the favorite right now in what is looking to be an epic battle with John Wick: Chapter 4. Wick goes into its second weekend with almost $100 million already in the bank, but will most likely fall fairly steeply from its opening weekend, and good reviews could give D&D the momentum it needs to pull off a victory that looked unlikely just a week ago. There is one big caveat with this morning’s prediction though.

Weekend projections: Dungeons & Dragons starts with impressive $38.5 million

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves will post the best opening for a film that isn’t a sequel since Nope debuted with $44.4 million in July last year. Paramount expects the film to come in with $38.5 million for the weekend, quite a bit higher than expectations going into the weekend, and well ahead of the second weekend of John Wick: Chapter 4.

2023 market prediction: new announcements, John Wick, push prediction up to $9.2 billion

Newly-confirmed release dates, including for Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken and The Book of Clarence, lift the total number of wide releases expected in 2023 up to 107 in this month’s theatrical market update. That, plus an outsized debut by John Wick: Chapter 4 (offset by a very disappointing performance by Shazam! Fury of the Gods) takes our overall prediction for the year up by $200 million to a respectable $9.2 billion.
