Weekend predictions: $40 million on the cards for Creed III

Creed III looks likely to have the best opening weekend for a film in the Creed franchise, which (not adjusted for inflation) would also give it the best opening for a Rocky movie too, at least based on its excellent $5.45 million in previews, and our model’s expectations. Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre looks like an also-ran, unfortunately. Meanwhile, Ant-Man and Cocaine Bear keep things interesting as our model picks apart this weekend’s box office prospects.

Theater counts: Creed III punches its way into 4,007 theaters

The third installment of the Creed franchise, and ninth overall film in the Rocky film series, Creed III enters the fray this week as the widest release, and the only film showing in over 4,000 locations. 4,007 of them, to be precise. The sports drama, starring Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Creed, is also Jordan’s directorial debut. The opening count is a Rocky franchise record. Also opening in wide release is the action-comedy Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre. Starting out in 2,168 locations, the movie features an all-star ensemble cast including Jason Statham, Hugh Grant, Aubrey Plaza, Cary Elwes, Josh

2023 market forecast: additions to the release schedule increase annual box office prediction to $9 billion

Some additions to the release schedule over the past few weeks have helped boost our model’s prediction for the overall domestic box office for 2023 up by a couple of hundred million dollars since our last update, to $9 billion. We’re now expecting 102 wide releases, up six from the announced list at the end of January, and up four from what we had assumed in our model. While the added releases aren’t in the blockbuster category—the model’s highest prediction for a new addition is a modest $40 million—they all have the potential to become mid-level hits, and they are

Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre trailer

Guy Ritchie’s crime caper, starring Jason Statham and Hugh Grant opens in theaters Friday, March 3 … Full Movie Details. Weekend projections: Cocaine Bear and Jesus Revolution exceed expectations as Ant-Man crashes

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is headed for the worst 2nd-weekend decline for a movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but will still cling on to top spot at the box office, according to the studios’ Sunday-morning projections. Cocaine Bear and Jesus Revolution feel more like the real winners of the weekend though, with both films turning in excellent performances.

Weekend predictions: Cocaine Bear and Jesus Revolution battle for second place

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania goes into the weekend a hot favorite to retain its spot at the top of box office chart. Even a steep fall from its $106.1-million opening should leave it well ahead of the two new wide releases. Which debutant finishes second is a more interesting question, and one that we don’t know with absolute certainty going into the weekend. Horror comedy Cocaine Bear should come in ahead of the faith-based drama Jesus Revolution, but it could be a close race.

Theater counts: Quantumania repeats as widest release and two newcomers arrive

It’s likely no big surprise to see last week’s juggernaut release retain its spot as the widest release this week. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania debuted in 4,345 locations and went on to collect an impressive $106 million in its opening weekend and currently enjoys a six-day domestic total of $131.33 million. The latest Marvel feature retains its opening theater count, once again making it the only film currently playing in over 4,000 movie houses.
