The two significant new releases, I.S.S. and Origin aren’t expected to challenge Mean Girls for top spot, and the biggest question is how steeply the comedy-musical will decline after its $28.6-million opening weekend.

Weekend projections: Mean Girls wins a quiet weekend as I.S.S. meets low expectations

Bad weather and a lack of major new movies is keeping folks home. In spite of that, this weekend is mostly meeting its low expectations at the box office, with Mean Girls staying at the top of the chart, even though it’s having a slightly disappointing second weekend, and I.S.S. coming in around its very low expectations. With the remaining Holiday films in slow decline, the current reported box office makes this the slowest weekend since November 3, when Five Nights at Freddy’s held on to top spot in spite of a steep second-weekend decline.

After schooling its competition at the domestic box office last weekend, Mean Girls will add 35 locations in its second week, propelling the film into a solid 3,826 theaters. The pop culture teen comedy took in a robust $28.64 million over its opening weekend and currently enjoys a six-day total of $37.14 million. The latest standings put the movie nearly $16 million ahead of The Beekeeper, the second-place finisher, which also made its debut last weekend. Mean Girls likewise outperformed its original incarnation, as the 2004 film scored $24.43 million over its opening session.

Mean Girls will post a bright-and-breezy $28 million this weekend, according to Paramount’s Sunday-morning projection. That’s just a shade higher than the $24.4 million earned by the original Mean Girls back in 2004 (although quite a bit less on an inflation-adjusted basis). It’ll cruise to the top of the box office chart this weekend, with The Beekeeper coming in a very respectable second.
