Weekend predictions: Mean Girls eyeing opening in the high 20s

Mean Girls looks set to post a peppy opening weekend somewhere in the high $20-millions, based on our model’s assessment of its $3.25 million in previews on Thursday. That will give it an easy weekend win, although The Beekeeper also looks as though it’ll post good numbers this weekend, and several Holiday holdovers are still bringing in respectable business.

Theater counts: Mean Girls ends Wonka’s reign as widest release

After four weeks of being the widest release in the land, Wonka will slide into the second-place spot this week as the $470-million worldwide earner makes way for newcomer, Mean Girls. The Willy Wonka origin story film topped the domestic box office chart on three out of four of it’s weekends, taking a backseat only to studio sibling Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom when the latter opened at number one during Wonka’s second weekend on the big screen. Along with Mean Girls, three other wide releases make their debut this week, including a long-awaited arrival to North American cinemas.

Weekend predictions: Wonka favorite for another weekend win

Wonka looks likely to top the box office chart for the third time this weekend, thanks to another strong hold and a mediocre opening for Blumhouse’s Night Swim. The legacy of the New Year still hangs over predictions this weekend, making it hard to be sure where everything will land, and Night Swim still has a shot at making it to the top, as well as no less than four returning films that have some theoretical chance of topping the chart. What we can say for sure is that we’re heading into a slow period at the box office.

Theater counts: Wonka remains widest release in a quiet start to 2024

After three weeks in North American cinemas, Wonka once again leads the pack as widest release, as it has done since its debut on December 15th. The Willy Wonka origin story has gobbled up over $147 million in domestic earnings in its first 20 days, while bringing in just above $253 million from international markets, catapulting its global take to over $400 million. The film does drop below 4,000 locations this week for the first time, but will still be available in 3,817 theaters, which easily holds off newcomer Night Swim’s starting count of 3,250 cinemas.
