Theater counts: Wonka will ring in the New Year as the widest release

It was an interesting week at the box office with a plethora of films opening on Friday, followed up by three wide releases on Christmas Day. Newcomer Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom took the weekend with an estimated $27.7 million in earnings, while Wonka, and the animated feature, Migration occupied the second and third spots at the domestic box office, making an estimated $18.05 million and $12.45 million respectively.

Weekend projections: Aquaman barely causes a ripple on slow pre-holiday weekend

A big selection of new releases won’t help prop up takings at movie theaters this weekend as Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom heads for an opening three-day weekend of about $28.1 million, according to Warner Bros.’ Sunday-morning projection. That’s less than half as much as Aquaman made on its opening weekend back in 2018. Christmas Eve falling on a Sunday will further blunt earnings as we head into what will be a long Christmas week.

Weekend predictions: Aquaman leads a cavalcade of new releases on Christmas weekend

With ten films opening or expanding wide over five days, one might think we’ll see records broken this Christmas weekend. Alas, it doesn’t look as though there’s a standout film in the pack, although there’s certainly plenty to choose from. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is set to take the crown, and five out the top six will be new in wide release according to our model. So there’s lots to dig into today.

Holiday theater counts: Wonka staves off a rush of newcomers heading into the Christmas weekend

As the lone wide release to enter theaters last week, Wonka dominated both the domestic and international box office, scoring a solid $39 million from North American showings, while adding just over $54 million to its previous overseas total of $59 million. The Willy Wonka origin story starring Timothée Chalamet will begin its sophomore frame by adding 10 locations this week, making the musical the widest film in the land with availability in 4,213 cinemas. Wonka will face far stiffer competition however this week at the box office as a bevy of new films make their way into theaters in

Weekend predictions: The Nun II looking good for opening weekend in the 30s

The Nun II looks likely to scare up an opening weekend somewhere between $30 million and $40 million, with our model predicting on opening around $35 million. That will give it the best opening weekend for The Conjuring franchise since The Nun, which opened with $53.8 million back in 2018. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 will meanwhile debut with less than $10 million, based on its tepid previews on Thursday. Bollywood movie Jawan should be the third new release to hit the top ten this weekend.

Theater counts: Equalizer 3 repels two newcomers to remain widest release

Last week’s box office winner is once again the widest release in the land. The latest in Denzel Washington’s long list of feature films, The Equalizer 3, finished its first weekend at the domestic box office by recording a strong $34.6 million from 3,965 locations. After six days, the action sequel has earned just over $48 million from North American audiences, while propelling the franchise to a worldwide box office of over $457 million. This week will see the debut of two other franchise favorites in the way of The Nun II, and My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, along

2023 market prediction: Taylor Swift keeps market on track for $9.5 billion

After Barbie saved the Summer, will Taylor Swift save the Fall? The announcement of Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour was a literal stop-the-presses moment for our market prediction update. Our model says Eras should be a $70-million movie, but, after just half a day, our audience buzz adjustment nearly doubled that number when our analysis was run. Like Barbie before it, this is a movie that has cultural phenomenon written all over
