The Barb–enheimer phenomenon continues unabated in theaters this weekend, with the two hits earning over $50 million between them, led by Barbie’s $33.7 million, which takes the film well past $500 million at the domestic box office. The Last Voyage of the Demeter is being left in the wake, with a modest $6.5-million debut.

Barbie will $1 billion at the worldwide box office today, according to Warner Bros.’ Sunday-morning projection, making it the second film released in 2023 to hit that mark (The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the other, with $1.36bn to date). Domestically, Barbie will bring in another $53 million or so this weekend, taking it past $450 million in total. Meg 2: The Trench looks like it will win a tight three-way race for second place with around $30 million.
Barbie will have no trouble staying at the top of the box office charts this weekend. After cruising past $400 million yesterday (the 9th-fastest film to reach that landmark), it will end the weekend over $450 million domestically still with a long run ahead of it. The battle for second place will be tight though, with Oppenheimer, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and Meg 2: The Trench all having a legitimate shot at taking the silver medal.
