Weekend projections: Dead Reckoning shows strong legs as it hits $80 million in five days

Mission: Impossible, Dead Reckoning—Part One is enjoying a strong hold through the weekend after starting out with a disappointing Wednesday and Thursday. So much so that it’ll hit $80 million by close of business on Sunday, according to Paramount’s projection this morning. With Sound of Freedom having a fantastic second weekend—up a projected 37% from its opening—the weekend box office will come in well ahead of Friday’s prediction.

Weekend predictions: Dead Reckoning headed for softer-than-expected debut

Mission: Impossible, Dead Reckoning—Part One will need to pick up its pace over the weekend to come in close to pre-release expectations. Its Wednesday and Thursday numbers ($15.5 million and $8.3 million, respectively) are perfectly respectable, but they point to a five-day opening under $70 million, and a Friday–Sunday weekend well behind Mission: Impossible—Fallout’s $61.2 million back in 2018.

Theater counts: Mission: Impossible on Cruise control heading into weekend, plus official expected theater counts for Barbie and Oppenheimer

In a rare mid-week opening, the top movie in the land is another blockbuster from legendary actor Tom Cruise. The latest Mission: Impossible feature, Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One scored $15.52 million on Wednesday (inclusive of $7 million in Tuesday previews — $1 million more from previews than its predecessor, Mission: Impossible — Fallout). The Christopher McQuarrie directed movie will add 278 theaters starting Friday, making itself available in 4,327 locations which includes standard and IMAX screens.

2023 market prediction: predicted box office for the year down to $9.2 billion after a shaky June

Poor performances by The Flash and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, plus, to a lesser extent, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken were all bad news for the market during June and the beginning of July. Between them, those three films dragged our market prediction down by almost $230 million. They were also a factor in convincing me to adjust our underlying assumption about the overall strength of the theatrical market. That change, even though it’s small in percentage terms, further pulls down the prediction for 2023, and makes a $10-billion year a much more distant prospect than it looked
