REVIEW
The Art Of Self Defense on Netflix stars Jessie Eisenberg who plays a mild-mannered accountant called Casey. During routine grocery shopping, he is attacked and mugged. Casey decides to enrol in a karate class for self-defence. It soon becomes clear the Sensai has darker defence methods which come out as he takes student Casey under his wing. Think Mr Miyagi from Karate Kid with the mindset of Kobra Kai or even Tyler Durden from Fight Club. The main positives about The Art Of Self-Defense are Jessie Eisenberg’s performance in the lead role, as an everyday man, trapped by his own fears and doubts, and given a new lease of life through his newfound defence practices and skills. The film is darkly funny in parts, whilst tackling issues of a man’s perceived role.
