REVIEW
The Boys, season 3 Karl Urban again plays Butcher, a man who had his family destroyed by superheroes, and is now on a mission to put ‘Supes’ away. He with a government funded, group 'the Boys'-(each member with an axe to grind with ‘Supes’) to lead the charge in putting the pin in the hot air balloon of a world worshiping corporate created disfuctional Superheroes. The Boys created by Garth Ennis many decades ago, was always ahead of the curve in , envisioning what the reality would be , if comic book heroes, would actually manifest ,and have to function in the real world. So in a more or less faithful adaptation of the tone of that original comic run in Amazon’s series, the Third season , shows no sign of abaiting ,in what seems an ever more darker and more bloody path as a more despondent Butcher tries to find his place during a peacetime of sorts the the war against the Supes. Mirroring this is (Antony Starr) always in watchable form as the super psychotic ‘Superman’ as his counterpart also finding himself frustratingly without a purpose as everyone moves on and ahead in the world. Leaving these two to share a reflective chat together over a tea. And maybe a hint as to what can be the only outcome in their mutual collision course , in this season. The Season opener, is a real eye opener , you might say.To the unitiated. But for those familiar with this series, would expect nothing less and par for the course.,as we have seen many gory violence situations playout over previous seasons. But a with more a knowing underlying humour to it all. What has always been fascinating is the unravelling of personalities, of both human protagonists and delusional and warped Superhero antagonists. And how both Worship and fear of these chemically created corporate gods affect all those around them. The Episodes show that maybe the goal posts maybe shifting for Butcher and his gang. As now the playing field may at last be even, as Butcher finds out and takes a short term chemical vial that acts as a Superhero anabolic steroid ,that may grant him the abilities to kill superpowered Supes, as well as seek out a weapon held in the that may kill Homelander. Also seen in the first episodes are a homage to Captain America figure in ‘Soldier Boy’ and a hilarious botched operation, that shows untrained heroes ,and strategic Warfare do not mix. As ever highlight of the show is Antony Starr as Homelander, now seemingly liberated and , and having to play the corporate PR game of Vought industries. And the slow unravelling of his megalomania, now coming increasingly to light. The season promises interesting dynamics on both sides of the fence in the War against the Supes.Karl Urban, also on brooding form, and has some of the best lines in the series. The series serves, as time goes on , the perfect superhero antidote for those audiences who are starting to feel that the Superhero Film and TV genre may be starting to outstay its welcome.
