REVIEW
"The Crow" (2024) is a long-awaited film adaptation that unfortunately falls short of expectations. Directed by Rupert Sanders, the movie attempts to capture the essence of James O’Barr’s 1980s comic while adding its own twist to the story. However, the execution leaves much to be desired.
The film follows Eric (played by Bill Skarsgård) and Shelly (portrayed by FKA twigs) as they navigate their tumultuous love story amidst personal struggles and a dark, supernatural underworld. Vincent (played by Danny Huston) adds to the complexity as a sinister force intertwined with their fates. However, the film fails to provide a coherent and engaging narrative, leaving audiences puzzled by the characters' motivations and the overarching mythology.
Rupert Sanders, known for his work on "Snow White And The Huntsman" and "Ghost In The Shell," falls short in delivering a compelling storytelling experience. While the film boasts moments of visual flair, the overall tone is somber and sluggish, with messy action sequences and a lackluster aesthetic. Only in the final act does the film showcase any semblance of excitement, as Eric embraces his avenging persona with a touch of campiness.
Overall, "The Crow" (2024) struggles to breathe new life into the iconic tale, failing to capture the magic of the original comic or the cult following of the 1994 film. Despite its potential, the film succumbs to its own mediocrity, leaving much to be desired for both fans and newcomers to the franchise.
