REVIEW
The Pirates The Last Royal Treasure is a 2022 South Korean High Seas period adventure about a band of pirates and bandits on the trail of Royal treasure.
It’s a spiritual sequel to 2014 The Pirates, but the viewer can watch this sequel and pick up what’s going on without the need to visit the original.
The film is currently ranked the number 1 viewed film in Korea according to Wikipedia by March 2022 at the time of going to press.
It’s a fun movie with a spirit of adventure and really enjoyable character relationships and interactions, particularly between Bandit leader Mu-Chi and female Pirate Captain Hae-Rang.
The music score is really epic and adds to the grand spectacle on show, and the battles are choreographed really well.
The Hollywood equivalent of this type of film would be Pirates Of The Caribbean, and the Korean actors are able to show similar levels of flair and charm in the portrayal of their characters as the Americans do in The Pirates of The Caribbean franchise.
The film is paced well, and you’ll feel it is a decent length at just over 2 hours long.
The one criticism could be that the villains seem to be present only to drive the anti-hero's story along, but this is a small nitpick overall.
