"The Menu" stars Ralph Fiennes, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Nicholas Hault. Co-writers and producers Seth Reiss and Will Tracy, who have worked on HBO's "Succession," have combined the proper ingredients for this tasty treat of a satirical thriller available on Netflix. The film is set on a private island and features Ralph Fiennes (in top form here) as 'Julian Slowik' the head chef and maestro to the invited diners of the evening at "Hawthorns" (a restaurant on an island getaway catered to the super-elite) where every designed course serves a purpose as a social critique of the very person dining on the platter made for them. Fiennes delivers a spot-on performance as the main scene-stealer here and is entertaining to watch as his undisguised contempt for his clientele eventually plays out during the evening of courses as they are served out. Each dish is a comedic performance, half food and half performance art, with digs at extreme society, wealth, and the extreme high-end restaurant concept excess. He is helped by his army of loyal culinary staff and among them Elsa (Hong Chau) who serves guests' needs with some delightful scenes of passive-aggressive encounters with the Hawthorn guests. The Menu serves as a cautionary tale of greed, ego, and consequences, but the final course culminates in a rather pedestrian revelation of motives, rather than any surprising twist in the tale. But along the way, it's just fun as a little social justice is dished out to our unwitting diners between courses.
