REVIEW
The first season of the lavish Amazon Prime show boasts numerous strengths. The visuals, including the scenery, outfits, and special effects, are stunning. One can appreciate the immense effort that went into turning this series into a reality.
The second season begins with the schemes of Sauron, the Dark Lord from the Lord of the Rings saga. Last season, he deceived the elves like Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) and Elrond (Robert Aramayo) to forge three powerful rings, aiming to rescue their ailing land of Lindon. Meanwhile, the idealistic human realm of Númenor is reeling from the death of its king and a defeat in Middle-earth.
Our story resumes with the Hobbit-esque Harfoots who are traveling alongside an enigmatic sorcerer referred to as The Stranger (played by Daniel Weyman) on a dangerous expedition. Meanwhile, the subterranean kingdom of Khazad-dûm is facing a catastrophic cave-in, indicating that it may also require some mighty rings for assistance.
Having just a few pieces from the Lord of the Rings appendices by J.R.R. Tolkien to narrate a tale set in the Second Age of Middle-earth allows for considerable creative freedom in interpreting the original writings. This, coupled with the portrayal of beloved characters that Tolkien aficionados cherish across generations, may render this series a hard watch
There are some beautiful rendered scenes scene though, from the lair of huge cave spiders to the everyday going ons of orc army everyday life.
The highlight and most interesting aspect of the show are the charting of Sauron's rise with moments in the series showcasing the schemes of a skilled shape shifting manipulator, allow The Rings of Power to offset, its fundamental issue as a prequel.
The issue with prequels, naturally, is that we are already aware of the ultimate fates of the main characters in Middle-earth. Furthermore, the
Key players, Galadriel (a guilty fierce warrior), Gandalf's( on a quest on find himself?)The Elves and Dwarfes who fall either into the fatally short sighted or in the 'I told you so' camp , makes the whole show feel like waiting for the bus to reach the destination.
The most captivating part of the series, particularly in this second season, centers on tracing Sauron's ascent. We witness his challenges and hardships while attempting to manipulate different races of Middle Earth to bend to his desires, leading to their ultimate ruin, which surprisingly makes for entertaining viewing. What is Amazon Prime aiming for? It's hard to say. Perhaps it's best not to dwell on it too deeply and simply enjoy the ride.
