Uncharted. A charismatic lead in the form of Nathan Drake, with lively action interweaved with rich characters is a natural inheritor to Indiana jones' mantle. A sure-fire winning franchise ready to take us on further adventures...! Well, this is certainly true of the Video game series...the movie? Well, more appropriately titled 'Nathan Drake and the Curse of the Lost Video game adaptation'. So the Holy grail of the Great video game movie adaption eludes us again. (The only one close so far has been Detective Pikachu with the Pokémon movie and Sonic the Hedgehog! ) The Uncharted movie adheres to the same basic, reliable structure: treasure hunter Nathan Drake, at the behest of some ancient map or cryptic piece of archaeology, solves a few puzzles and crash-lands into far-flung locations. Riding trains, helicopters, or speedboats, and dodging bullets but saddled with a miscast Tom Holland playing the Nathan Drake character and Mark Wahlberg, as Drake’s mentor and father figure, Victor "Sully" Sullivan, placed here so, (one can only) guess beef up proceedings it all feels rather 2D. With no chemistry or charm to carry us through the usual adventure tropes, it's a passive experience. Sad to say, our search for a studio that can port great Video properties into movies continues...
