A. Rimbaud Review: An Unorthodox Biographical Film

In Patrick Wang’s unconventional biopic A. Rimbaud, the 19th-century poet Arthur Rimbaud’s life is depicted in a refreshingly original way that challenges the typical biographical narrative. Beginning with Rimbaud engaging the audience directly, the film incorporates surprises in nearly every scene. Spanning nearly three hours, it employs a minimalist aesthetic, filmed on a blacked-out soundstage with minimal props, yet evokes rich imagery through poetic cinematography by Frank Barrera.

The film features a standout performance by young Australian actor Blake Draper, who portrays Rimbaud with confidence and linguistic skill, captivating the audience despite interacting solely with offscreen musical instruments representing other characters. Although the format may initially seem absurd, viewers become invested in these unique conversations. Wang’s inventive choices include editing Rimbaud’s movements to mimic stop-motion, and utilizing animated chalk lines to suggest natural elements.

While A. Rimbaud may not appeal to every viewer, it offers substantial rewards for those willing to engage with its experimental nature. The film resonates with the spirit of Rimbaud’s poetry, creating a distinct narrative that honors its subject. Wang’s dedication to his creative vision culminates in an extraordinary cinematic experience that is both bold and poetic. A. Rimbaud will screen at ICA London starting August 22.
