In “The Possession of Button House,” the beloved ghosts from the BBC sitcom “Ghosts” face an uncertain future as their home is at risk. Desperate for help, they seek out former owners Alison (Charlotte Ritchie) and Mike (Kiell Smith-Bynoe). It’s been three years since Season 5 ended on a bittersweet note, so fans will be delighted to reunite with characters like the disgraced Tory MP Julian (Simon Farnaby) and the group of eccentric spirits who haunt Button House.
After Alison and Mike sold the house for a hotel and golf resort, nothing progressed, prompting Julian to express frustration humorously. The film introduces new characters, including eco-protestors and a troubled foster child, Jack (Scott Ellis Watson), intertwining their fates with the ghosts.
The film stands out not only through its comedic moments but also through its engaging plot and genre-blending approach. The ghosts discover they can possess the local kids, allowing for unique and humorous scenarios, such as Julian (still donning his 1993 scandal attire) in jeans. The film mixes mild scares, sitcom humor, and elements from various genres, making it feel fresh while still comforting to fans.
With its whimsical yet poignant narrative, “The Possession of Button House” is a joyous, spectral adventure that caters to longtime viewers and new audiences alike, leaving fans hopeful for a sequel.
