Jordan Firstman gained fame during the COVID pandemic with humorous impressions on Instagram and has showcased his talent in projects like I Love LA and Rotting in the Sun. In his feature debut, Club Kid, he uses his persona to explore vulnerability through Peter, a character reminiscent of his past roles. The film begins in 2016 during a vibrant Brooklyn club scene, where Peter immerses himself in a lifestyle of partying and drugs. Fast forward ten years, Peter’s life remains a cycle of drug-fueled nights and hangovers, until he unexpectedly learns he has a 10-year-old son, Arlo, whom he previously fathered during a one-night stand.
What unfolds is a queer take on Big Daddy, balancing humor with heartfelt moments as Peter navigates his new role as a father. The chemistry between Firstman and newcomer Reggie Absolom, who plays Arlo, shines through, highlighting both the chaotic and touching aspects of their relationship. While Peter’s lifestyle poses challenges for his son, the film deepens into themes of self-loathing and unaddressed sadness masked by partying. Despite not fully delving into Peter’s background, the film achieves a powerful blend of introspection and sentimentality. Overall, Club Kid emerges as an accessible yet profound exploration of identity and responsibility, marking a triumphant directorial debut for Firstman. The film is set for release in UK cinemas on January 8, 2027.
