I Love Boosters Review – ‘Hilariously imaginative and exceptionally entertaining’

In “I Love Boosters,” directed by Boots Riley, the ‘Velvet Gang’—Corvette (Keke Palmer), Sade (Naomi Ackie), and Mariah (Taylour Paige)—steals high-end fashion items to sell at discounted prices. Their plot thickens when Corvette discovers that Christie Smith (Demi Moore), the store owner, has stolen one of her designs, prompting the gang to seek revenge. Following the surreal style of Riley’s earlier film, “Sorry To Bother You,” this satirical take on the fashion industry critiques pyramid schemes, fast fashion, and workers’ rights while exploring who controls art and creativity.

The film is rich in vibrant visuals and quirky elements, resembling a live-action Looney Tunes caper with elaborate costumes and stunning cinematography. The ensemble cast, including a flamboyant Will Poulter as a sycophantic shop manager and an almost unrecognizable Don Cheadle as a pyramid schemer, fully embrace the film’s absurdity. While the narrative’s momentum wanes in the second half—introducing broader themes of labor practices and a sci-fi subplot—the film remains an audaciously funny exploration of creativity and capitalism.

Despite occasionally teetering under the weight of its ambitious ideas, “I Love Boosters” showcases a unique blend of humor and creativity. With stellar performances, particularly from Palmer and Moore, it stands out as an original heist film that doesn’t merely mimic trends but innovatively critiques them.
