Gregg Araki, a notable figure in indie cinema since his 1992 film The Living End, returns with I Want Your Sex, showcasing his unique style and knack for casting. This new feature, co-written with Karley Sciortino, centers around Elliot (Cooper Hoffman), a young man grappling with adulthood while relying on his girlfriend Minerva (played by Charli XCX). As Minerva supports them while working on her doctorate, Elliot’s attempts to ignite their sex life are mostly unsuccessful. Eventually, he lands a job as a studio assistant to the provocative artist Erika Tracy (Olivia Wilde), who soon uses him as her personal plaything in a world of sadomasochism.
The film opens with a corpse in a pool, leading to a flashback narrative filled with twists and dark humor, including detectives played by Margaret Cho and Johnny Knoxville. Amidst the chaos, Erika grapples with her upcoming art show, ultimately failing while Elliot becomes ensnared in her world. Araki uses the art scene as a backdrop to explore themes of consent and exploitation, blending humor with poignant observations about modern relationships. Described as a "sex-positive love letter to Gen Z," the film reveals that sex is never free from complications, delivering a transgressive and vibrant cinematic experience. I Want Your Sex is set to be released in UK cinemas on August 28.
