“Klara and the Sun,” adapted from Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel, features Klara (Jenna Ortega), an “artificial friend” yearning for a human owner. Set amidst a post-World War III landscape, the film grapples with themes of humanity, grief, and companionship in an era wary of artificial intelligence. After an eager wait in a shop, Klara is purchased by Josie (Mia Tharia) and her mother Chrissie (Amy Adams), only to discover that life is complex, filled with sorrow and unanswered questions.
Director Taika Waititi infuses charm into Klara’s innocent quest to understand human emotions, but the tone fluctuates unevenly. Scenes range from humor with Josie’s classmates to the tragedy of Chrissie’s grief, culminating in moments of unsettling violence. While Klara’s naive perspective invites warmth and whimsy, the film risks being overwhelmed by these tonal shifts, leaving it feeling disjointed.
Despite its whimsical attempts, the narrative echoes a melancholic streak familiar from works like “The Bicentennial Man” and “A.I.: Artificial Intelligence,” exploring how artificial beings might fill the void of lost loved ones. While Klara’s journey is poignant, anchored by Ortega’s performance, concerns linger about the film’s overall cohesion. Ultimately, “Klara and the Sun” offers a unique exploration of love and sacrifice, yet struggles to blend its varied elements into a harmonious story.
