Film Review Summary: Ramayana: Rise Of A Legend
In "Ramayana: Rise Of A Legend," evil king Ravana (Naveen ‘Yash’ Kumar) threatens the universe, prompting the god Vishnu to incarnate as Rama (Ranbir Kapoor). This visually stunning film, reputedly one of India’s costliest at $500 million, melds high-tech Hollywood filmmaking with classical Indian mythology. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, the movie channels elements from franchises like "The Lord Of The Rings" and "Avatar," yet retains a unique, populist flair.
Despite its lengthy runtime and grandiose storytelling, the film excels in scale and spectacle. The narrative, filled with prologues, centers on Ravana’s transformation from a defeated king to a powerful adversary, compelling the demigods to enlist Vishnu’s help as Rama. Their impending confrontation, however, is set for a sequel in 2028.
While the film features colorful action scenes, processions, and mythological duels, the characters feel one-dimensional, often delivering overly dramatic speeches about destiny and duty. Kapoor’s portrayal of Rama lacks depth, while Yash’s villainous antics come off as too exaggerated. The score by Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman elevates the experience, especially during visually captivating montages.
Ultimately, "Ramayana" thrives during its action sequences and imaginative visuals, though it suffers from pacing issues and narrative bloat. It delivers an entertaining origin story that captivates when focusing on its grandeur, concluding with a cliffhanger against a sunset.
