Video game adaptations often struggle to find a balance between staying true to their source material and carving out a unique identity. HBO’s The Last of Us received acclaim yet still had its flaws. Zach Cregger’s reboot of Resident Evil stands out by focusing on the essentials of ‘survival horror’ while minimizing franchise lore. The film features subtle nods to the series without excessive fan service, making it accessible even to those unfamiliar with the games.
Cregger, known for his horror work, adopts a straightforward narrative that complements the film’s brisk pace. The protagonist, Bryan (Austin Abrams), is a relatable average guy, tasked with delivering a mysterious package in the zombie-infested Raccoon City. His awkward encounters with grotesque mutant horrors heighten both the humor and horror, especially as he navigates an impending fatherhood dilemma.
Cregger blends slapstick and scares, reminiscent of Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead II, as Abrams portrays an everyman amidst chaos. The film skillfully balances its comedic elements with genuine terror, though some self-referential moments can feel overt—such as Bryan’s shout of ‘Video games!’ after defeating zombies. Ultimately, Resident Evil captivates by merging potent scares with humor, offering a fresh perspective on a well-trodden franchise. It’s set to release in UK cinemas on February 21.
