Way of the Sword Review — ‘Offers fluid and accurate combat’

Onimusha: Way of the Sword Review

Capcom’s long-awaited revival of the Onimusha series, “Way of the Sword,” brings a refreshing blend of action and storytelling to modern consoles and PC. Reviving the franchise after two decades, this installment embraces its action roots, offering smooth and precise combat that combines classic swordplay with supernatural abilities. Unlike typical Soulslike games with sparse narratives, “Way of the Sword” delivers a compelling tale steeped in Japanese mythology, particularly through the richly developed characters of Miyamoto Musashi and his rival, Sasaki Ganryu.

Players experience Musashi’s journey in Edo-period Kyoto, where his personality adds humor to his character. The rivalry between Musashi and Ganryu, ignited through their shared battles against demons, provides a deep emotional core to the gameplay. Musashi’s swordsmanship requires tactical engagement—players must carefully observe enemy movements and perfect their defensive strategies to succeed.

Despite incorporating some elements reminiscent of Dark Souls in difficulty, “Way of the Sword” offers adjustable settings for those more interested in the narrative. While combat shines, exploration can feel linear and occasionally padded with side quests and grinding, slightly diminishing the overall experience. However, with its engaging story, dynamic characters, and thrilling combat, “Way of the Sword” stands out as a top-tier action RPG. For the most authentic experience, players are encouraged to utilize the original Japanese dialogue.
