Barbara Kopple’s film, “Harlan County, U.S.A.” (1976), opens with a striking sequence that illustrates the dangers of life in the Kentucky coal mines, depicting men transported into the earth’s depths and returning with coal. This imagery conveys a harsh reality where human lives are sacrificed for economic gain. The film chronicles the miners’ struggles, particularly during the 1973-74 strike, highlighting the vast divide between workers’ and bosses’ perspectives. Early interviews reveal the grim history of exploitation, such as children working long hours for meager pay, contrasted with newsreel footage of past strikes highlighting ongoing violence and resistance.
As the narrative unfolds, the miners’ heritage is underscored by a Duke Power spokesperson’s acknowledgment of appalling living conditions. This paternalistic attitude sharply contrasts with a union organizer’s characterization of the local regime as “feudal.” The film juxtaposes conflicting viewpoints, emphasizing the stark realities faced by the workers. The slogan “Whose side are you on?” echoes throughout, encapsulating the miners’ struggle.
Kopple also explores internal power dynamics within the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA), highlighting the political challenges alongside the ongoing labor fight. The film captures the raw emotions of the strikers, illustrating their solidarity and resolve, despite the lack of a conventional narrative. Ultimately, Kopple prioritizes emotional truth over detailed analysis, leaving viewers with powerful imagery that evokes deep reflection on the miners’ plight.
