In the latest film, Ali G (Sacha Baron Cohen) attempts to revive his TV career in the U.S. after losing his job and facing an unexpected pregnancy with girlfriend Julie (Morgana Robinson). Originally a parody of a fading rap culture, Ali G now feels outdated, despite Cohen’s efforts to reimagine the character. Instead of a direct sequel to Ali G Indahouse, the film immerses viewers in a world where clueless characters interact with Ali G in a style reminiscent of Borat and Bruno.
Set in 2026, Ali is unwilling to let Julie’s expectations of marriage tie him down as he learns HBO is interested in a revival of his show. His journey takes him to Los Angeles, where he faces absurdity at the hands of various characters—including a hyper-liberal professor and an Israeli security expert—both played by Cohen. These interactions deliver some memorable moments, particularly in the film’s shocking climax. However, much of the first two acts lack humor, with only sporadic funny scenes to hold interest.
While the film eventually surprises with inventive scenarios, including a chilling game show and inventive uses of AI, it largely struggles to maintain comedic momentum. If the film’s climax dazzles, the overall comedic effectiveness of Ali G feels diminished, making a case for retiring the character. Ultimately, while there are standout moments, the film suffers from significant stretches of unfunny content.
