In this film, “Sean” (John Cena), a spy, returns to his hometown for a funeral, only to be kidnapped with old friends after being framed for a missing nuclear bomb. As they seek the real thief to clear their names, the film struggles under heavy product placement, particularly through nostalgic references to Matchbox cars.
The story opens with an incongruous, AI-generated small town scene reminiscent of the ’50s but set in 1997, featuring young Sean’s crush on Aimee (Reagan Marum), during a drawn-out scene highlighting the merits of Matchbox toys. Fast forward 28 years, Sean attends the funeral of his mentor, Smalley, and reunites with friends—but soon finds themselves suspects in a nuclear heist.
Despite a capable cast, including Corey Stoll and Danai Gurira, the film lacks cohesion and impactful action, disappointing given the director’s background in stunt work. The connection between the nostalgic toy and the vehicle-based plot feels forced and the characters are largely forgettable. Although Cena and his companions elicit a few laughs, the overall tone is muddled with clunky product placements and familiar clichés.
Ultimately, the film is a disjointed mishmash that fails to capitalize on its talented ensemble, leaving audiences with the suggestion that playing with toy cars might be a more fulfilling experience.
