Review of Queer Edward II: Important Cinematic Heritage

In 1991, Derek Jarman created a bold adaptation of Christopher Marlowe’s play “Edward II,” marking a pivotal moment in both his career and British cinema. Funded by the BBC with an £800,000 budget, Jarman’s vision pushed boundaries, integrating the queer politics of early 1990s England and the tragic love story central to Marlowe’s narrative. This era was marked by legislative hostility towards homosexuality and the AIDS crisis, which deeply influenced Jarman’s work.

Embracing a postmodern style, he conveyed the urgency of love in oppressive times. A notable aspect of the production was the collaboration with young cameraman Seamus McGarvey, who filmed freely behind the scenes, capturing significant footage that forms much of “Queer Edward II.” This documentary, directed by Theo Rollason, compiles over thirty hours of footage, along with archival materials that contextualize the politically charged atmosphere surrounding the film.

One striking incident involved the activist group OutRage, which interrupted a recording session by Cliff Richard, known for his rumored closeted status, demanding he come out. Jarman, diagnosed with HIV five years earlier, exhibited remarkable resilience, continuing to create after “Edward II.” His later works included “Wittgenstein” (1993) and “Blue” (1993). “Queer Edward II” preserves the spirit of Jarman’s groundbreaking art and activism, and will be screened at the BFI London Film Festival on October 11, 13, and 18, 2026.
