In “The Social Reckoning,” directed by Aaron Sorkin, Facebook data engineer Frances Haugen (Mikey Madison) serves as a whistleblower, revealing the platform’s role in amplifying outrage and political extremism. This film diverges from Sorkin’s earlier “The Social Network,” focusing not on Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, now a minor antagonist, but rather on Haugen’s journey. Initially portrayed as an awkward outsider in Facebook’s tech landscape, Haugen’s mission is to expose how the company’s algorithm promotes extremist groups and negatively impacts young women’s mental health.
Her revelations intensify against the backdrop of the January 6, 2021 Capitol insurrection, transforming her unease into courageous activism. Madison delivers a compelling performance, showcasing her character’s complexity through sharp dialogue exchanges, especially with investigative reporter Jeff Horwitz (Jeremy Allen White). While the film is rich in clever dialogue and wit, it lacks the visual style of David Fincher’s original, making it feel somewhat subdued despite its higher stakes.
The emphasis on investigative journalism over litigation, combined with an appreciation for traditional media, is a welcome shift. Although it may not reach the visual heights of its predecessor, the compelling narrative and Madison’s strong portrayal maintain viewer engagement in addressing the pressing issues surrounding Zuckerberg’s controversial platform. Ultimately, Sorkin’s storytelling effectively critiques the social media landscape, providing a timely exploration of its implications for society.
